Long term consistency is the goal. Go slow, take it easy, chat to the people around you, make it fun. Literally no-one cares how fast or slow you are.

The most surprising thing for me was how the guys were exactly what you would expect, but their partners/wives were often MUCH worse. Sometimes they seemed even more rabid racists/fascist/crazy.
