Am I the only one that wishes you could have Slack huddles with features such as having the conference chat in a thread but using Google Meet under the hood with all its goodness of noise canceling and many other features?

The most important thing about #exercise is not striving for personal bests or pushing yourself to the limit every time you train… it’s to make it repeatable. Long term consistency is the goal. Go slow, take it easy, chat to the people around you, make it fun. Literally no-one cares how fast or slow you are.

The BSc-level version of my transformers lecture is finished: mlvu.github.io/transformers/
Now to record the videos.
This was a nice opportunity to bring the material up to date a bit and show the whole history from self-attention to ChatGPT in one story.

A diagram showing how self-attention works.
A diagram for the vectorized version of self-attention.
A slide explaining in-context learning.
A slide to accompany the discussion of whether GPT-style chat bots are intelligent, in some sense. It shows a veriety of headlines and thinkpieces.

I'll never forget watching a show -- can't remember the name -- where a guy went around the USA looking for KKK and other types like that to chat. The most surprising thing for me was how the guys were exactly what you would expect, but their partners/wives were often MUCH worse. Sometimes they seemed even more rabid racists/fascist/crazy.
"one of the women gave the stiff-armed Hitler salute.”
Reminded me of that.

One thing I definitely notice when watching a backup restore is how much pointless garbage is still hanging around. I really need to clean stuff up.E.g. I do not need work chat logs going back to 2009…
However, the process of cleaning all that up is likely a day or more of work.

Don't forget, #AllThingsTech has our own Discord server for those that are looking to hang out and chat outside of Mastodon.
We feel that there are often times that longer, more in-depth conversations are wanted/needed and Discord is a great place to have those conversations.
It's a great place to give us feedback about our server to help make it a better place.…

The logo for the AllThingsTech.social Mastodon instance. You can see some orange lines with circles at one end that give it a circuit board like feeling with some yellow dots placed at the other end surrounded by a green and purple semi-circle.

Looking at console logs in the Edge browser dev tools.
Me: Wait, what's that new icon? *hovers over*
Edge: "Ask Copilot: explain this error"
*Clicks on the icon* — opens Copilot chat pane (with blank chat text field) 🤦‍♂️

A screenshot of a devtools console showing lines of console logs with highlighted text and a cursor. One of the highlighted line contains a new icon on the right. Cursor hovers over it, a tooltip appears showing "Ask Copilot: explain this error"

Another upsetting news story. This one about doctors in the US trying to support Dr Khaled Alser working at Nasser hospital in Gaza via text messages. Israel attacked the hospital. Various nurses and doctors were injured or killed. Then Alser stopped responding.

The web is such a mess. I was trying to look up something about refresh rates and the human eye / perception. All sorts of shadey sounding domains at the top of the results. Pick the least shadey one and half way into the article is this incredible … infographic? I don’t even know what to call it. #ai is going great. How deeply sad.

A very obviously AI generated image. Title text is “RESTFLE FABES. BRSS-FF-RES”. There is a large wooden clock atop a desert landscape and something like a bar chat, but spikier with the left side showing percentages, but often with figures that aren’t actually numbers.

Using #KentCountyCouncil #Library online "chat with a Librarian" function I am pleasingly warmed by finding that they share the load out with an "external librarian from the US who is helping answer this library's questions while the local librarians are out"
Sharing resources with entirely separate organisations in other countries is one of the more suprising and progressive acts I've noticed public libraries doing. It's amazing.
